Goal 2026: The Business Playbook

Preparing for a Global Audience

During the 2026 summer tournament, Smithville and the Northland will feel more international than ever before. With four major national teams—Argentina, the Netherlands, England, and Algeria—basing their operations in our metro region, we are expecting a surge of diverse cultures and languages right here in our community.

The Goal: Remove Friction

The goal is to make communication and service easy, even when words aren't the same. You don’t need to be multilingual to be ready; you just need a few "universal" tools that make visitors feel confident and welcomed in Smithville.

The “Universal Welcome” Toolkit

These low-effort, high-return upgrades help bridge the gap for international guests and locals alike:

  • Icon-Based Signage: Use clear, universal icons for essentials like Restrooms, Order Here, Pick Up, Entrance/Exit, Parking, and Hours. Icons work in every language.

  • QR Code Menus/Services: A QR code allows visitors to use their phone’s built-in translation features to read your menu or service list instantly.

  • Verified Google Profile: Ensure your hours, address, and photos are current so visitors can find your Smithville location without needing to ask for directions.

  • The "Translation Plan": Load a preferred app (like Google Translate) on shop devices now. Decide as a team: “If we hit a language barrier, we’ll use the app and keep it friendly.”

Communication & Staff Readiness

Train your team on a consistent, kind 10-second opener that works even when someone’s English is limited:

The Script: “Hi! Welcome in. Ordering is right here. Pick-up is over there. Restrooms are to the left.”

The "Cheat Sheet" Phrase List: Post these at the register to create instant goodwill:

  • “Hello / Welcome”

  • “Please / Thank you”

  • “Order here”

  • “One moment”

💡 Pro Tip: Calm and Confident

When communication gets tricky: Smile, slow down, use gestures, and point to signs or menus. Kindness is the language people remember long after they leave the Northland.

Higher Volume: Keep It Friendly, Fast, and Safe

With the population of the region expected to surge, the window to “get ready without stress” is right now. Focus on handling higher volume with calm confidence.

The “Peak Moment” Plan

Write a simple 5-line plan for those moments when lines get long or the phone won't stop ringing:

  • Point Person: Who is in charge when it gets busy?

  • Flow Plan: What is our line/flow strategy to prevent crowding?

  • Communication: How do we update customers on wait times?

  • Tech Backup: What do we do if the Wi-Fi or payment processor hiccups?

  • De-escalation: How do we handle an upset customer with grace?

Protect Your Team

Your team needs to know you have their back when the metro gets busy.

  • Confirm Break Plans: Ensure staff stay hydrated and rested during high-volume shifts.

  • Traffic Grace Policy: Decide your policy for June/July commute disruptions now so you aren't debating it during a rush.

  • Cross-Training: Ensure one absence doesn't derail the day by cross-training a key task.

  • The Calm Mantra: Agree on one phrase for everyone to use: “Thanks for your patience—we’ll take great care of you.”

Did You Know? English is the primary lingua franca for on-field communication and referee teams, so most official delegations will be comfortable navigating in English.

Essential Guest Resources: Safety & Support

Sometimes, "Midwest Welcome" means knowing exactly where to send someone when things go wrong.

  • Consulate Services (Lost Passports/Emergencies)

KC2026 is setting up an International Consular Services Center at the Overland Park Convention Center from June 11 – July 13.

  • Refer guests here for: Lost/stolen passports, emergency travel documents, or coordination with foreign governments.

  • Note: Consular staff help citizens navigate local systems; they do not replace local emergency services.

  • Healthcare: “Right Care, Right Place”

If a visitor asks for medical help, use this simple guide to help them get the right care and prevent local overcrowding:

  • Urgent Care: Back/muscle pain, bronchitis, minor cuts/burns, earaches, skin conditions, sprains, or UTIs.

  • Emergency Care (Call 911): Chest pain, head injuries, seizures, severe abdominal pain, shortness of breath, or uncontrolled bleeding.

This Week’s Actions (Do them today):

  • Walk-Through: Walk through your business as if you don't speak English. Can you find the restroom? Do you know where to stand? Add one clear icon sign and one QR code at your counter.

  • The 15-Minute Huddle: Hold a "Peak Moment" huddle with your team: “Here’s what we do when it gets busy, here’s who runs point, and here’s how we keep it calm.” Done.

You may use the term “FIFA World Cup 2026™” only in plain text for editorial purposes, without implying any official association. E.g. “Join us for a public screening of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ match between Country A and Country B at Central Park on June 15.”

• Avoid using “FIFA” or “World Cup 2026™” in your event name or marketing materials. • Use general terms like “soccer” or “tournament” instead. • Team names (e.g., USA vs. Canada) can be shown in plain text 25 for editorial purposes, but not with official logos or trademarks.

Example Public Viewing language: “Join us for a public screening of the FIFA World Cup 2026™

match between Argentina and Austria at North Park at Zona Rosa on June 16. We're excited to be one of seven Northland locations hosting a live viewing in partnership with Go North KC!”

"FIFA World Cup 2026™" ok to use in event descriptions (text) but not in marketing, headlines, titles, etc.
